A Beginner’s Guide to THC Cannabinoids in Hemp
When out shopping for hemp products, it is common to find products that focus on THC cannabinoids. While many shoppers know what THC is, seeing cannabinoid isolate products like THCA, THCV, or THCB products can feel like a whole new world. This is the perfect example of why education surrounding the hemp plant is so important.
At Panther Canna, we want all of our shoppers to be confident and informed while shopping for hemp-derived products. And for those new to hemp-derived THC products, this is the perfect place to start!
What is THC?
THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol. According to information shared by Live Science, “THC is one of many compounds found in the resin secreted by glands of the marijuana plant. More of these glands are found around the reproductive organs of the plant than on any other area of the plant.”
At the time of this writing, there are more than 100 known cannabinoids found within the hemp plant. While THC is the most common cannabinoid found in marijuana, it is not as abundant in hemp. This is due to hundreds of years of selective breeding for specific traits, such as CBD production, minor cannabinoid production, or fiber use.
Out of those more than 100 known cannabinoids found within the hemp plant, only a handful of them produce psychoactive properties. These are the THC cannabinoids. Some THC cannabinoids, like Delta 9, are more plentiful than others, for example, THCV.
Other THC properties can include anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory properties. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “A highly promising area of research is its use for PTSD in veterans who are returning from combat zones. Many veterans and their therapists report drastic improvement and clamor for more studies, and for a loosening of governmental restrictions on its study.”
It is worth noting that many studies observing the medical use of THC cannabinoids are still considered preliminary. However, the expansion of hemp legalization has led to more biomass being readily available for research.
THC Starts as THCA
Before THC cannabinoids like Delta 8 or Delta 9 appear, they first begin as THCA (scientifically known as tetrahydrocannabinolic acid). According to WebMD, “If you smoke or vaporize THCA, it instantly changes into THC, which can produce a high.”
This is done through a process called decarboxylation. In order for this process to work, THCA needs to reach between 220°F and 240°F for the chemical change to take place. This is why smokable hemp flower and concentrates need to be heated in order for an individual to feel its effects.
Different THC Cannabinoids
There are many different THC cannabinoids. While ones like Delta 9 and Delta 8 are commonly known, did you know there are THC minor cannabinoids? A few to consider are:
- THCP
- THCB
- THCV
- THCJD
- Delta 10
- THCH
